Venezia FC On Pace for Relegation

Venezia FC On Pace for Relegation

Venezia FC has a history dating back to 1907, but surviving at the top level of Italian football has been a difficult order to fill since WWII.

After the end of World War II and a two-year hiatus, the 1946-47 campaign restored top-flight Serie A in Italy. Venezia didn’t survive the first season and was demoted to Serie B at the end of the 1947 campaign.

Venezia were promoted to Serie A in 1949, played one campaign, and were immediately demoted to Serie B.

After 12 years, Venezia found their way back to Serie A in 1961, played two campaigns, and were demoted again after the 1963 season.

Earning their way back to Serie A in 1966, another one-and-done campaign saw Venezia right back down in Serie B.

After 20 years, Venezia earned a promotion to Serie A in 1998, and only lasted two campaigns before being demoted again in 2000.

Venezia quickly earned their way right back to Serie A in 2001, but another one-and-done season had them back in the second tier after one season.

After another 20-year absence, Venezia finally returned to Serie A in 2021, but another one-and-done year ended with a Serie B relegation after the 2022 season.

This is Venezia’s first campaign back in the top flight since 2024, and the odds of them staying in Serie A this year are already stacked against them.

Through the first 10 rounds of the 2026-27 campaign, Venezia has 3 points from one win and 9 losses, which have them alone at the bottom of the Serie A table.

With only 6 goals scored while allowing 20 balls inside their framework, the -14 differential is the worst in the league, but there is some hope.

One thing that Venezia has going for them is all the clubs around them near the bottom of the Serie A table.

Udinese has 5 points; Monza only has 7 points, and three clubs have 8 points. There has been an outrageous amount of goal-scoring this season, with all of the bottom-feeders in Serie A giving up goals in droves.

In all, seven clubs have allowed 20 or more goals through only 10 rounds of play, and we still have 26 more to play before the 2026-27 Serie A campaign ends.

Can Venezia get their shit together? They have been promoted and sent down after one season in Serie A five times since 1950. Staying Power? Not so strong!

On October 13th, manager Giovanni Stroppa was sacked, and in came someone known as being a ‘survival specialist’.

Davide Nicola was brought in to salvage the 0 – 6 start to the campaign for Venezia, but a 1 – 3 beginning wasn’t what the doctor ordered.

Can the magic of Nicola help keep Venezia in Serie A past one campaign, or is this another one-and-done season?

Only time will tell!!
